Preserve Your Tooth and Mend Your Smile
When a tooth has been damaged by cavities, erosion, or trauma, it is important to protect the remaining healthy tooth structure and reinforce the strength of the bite before more harm can take place. A dental crown at our Rockville, Rockville, Maryland practice can restore strength to the tooth and shield it from further degradation, while returning beauty and health to a patient’s smile.
If your teeth are damaged and you are considering dental crowns, contact our cosmetic dentistry experts serving Rockville, Maryland, Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia to schedule a consultation.
To prepare the tooth for a dental crown, our dentists first remove any decay and file the tooth down so that the crown will fit over the remaining tooth structure while matching the size of surrounding teeth. Our dentists then take a digital scan of the tooth and send it to a lab where a crown is made of porcelain, metal, or metal fused to a porcelain shell. Until the permanent crown returns from the lab, a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth.
Once the crown has been crafted, the patient returns to our office for a second visit. The temporary crown is taken off, and the permanent crown is securely fastened to the top of the natural tooth. This gives the patient a strong bite with a tooth that is stronger and healthier than the damaged tooth it replaced.
Just as with normal teeth, it is important to keep dental crowns clean, so daily brushing and flossing are encouraged, along with regular visits to our office. Crowns can last around 15 years, after which they will need to be replaced.
Schedule an appointment at our cosmetic dentistry office to talk with our experienced dentists. We would be more than happy to discuss whether dental crowns, or any of the other treatments available at our Rockville, Maryland practice, would be best suited to your case.
